Luebo is a historically significant town located in the Kasaï Province in the central Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is situated at the confluence of the Lulua and Luebo rivers and served for many years as the administrative headquarters of the Kasaï District. Luebo gained particular importance in 1891 as the site of the first Presbyterian mission in the region, established by Americans William Sheppard and Samuel Lapsley. This mission evolved into a major center for education, publishing, and medical care, leaving a lasting impact on the social fabric of the region. Economically, the town benefited from its status as a river port, which facilitated the transport of agricultural goods and diamonds from nearby mines. Today, Luebo is the capital of the territory that bears its name, though it faces severe infrastructure challenges due to soil erosion and aging roads. Nevertheless, it remains a powerful symbol of the colonial and religious history of central Congo.
