Kilo-Moto Gold Mines (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

The Kilo-Moto gold mines, located in current-day Ituri and Haut-Uele provinces, represent one of Africa's most storied mineral extraction regions. Gold was first identified in Kilo in 1903 and in Moto in 1905 by Australian prospectors, leading to the formation of one of the world's largest state-run gold enterprises of the time. During the Belgian colonial era, the region saw massive infrastructural investment, including the construction of hydroelectric dams and extensive road networks to support industrial-scale mining. Production peaked in the 1940s, providing critical gold reserves that supported the Allied efforts during World War II. However, the mines' history is also marked by the severe exploitation of Congolese labor under the colonial administrative system. Following independence, the operations were nationalized under the SOKIMO state company. Today, the area is home to both major international mining projects and thousands of artisanal miners. The historical ruins of colonial-era processing plants still dot the landscape, reflecting the long-standing mineral heritage of northeastern Congo.
