The historic square of Telč, officially named Zachariáš of Hradec Square, is an outstanding example of Renaissance urban planning in Central Europe. The town was founded in the 14th century, but it owes its current appearance primarily to the 16th century, when Zachariáš of Hradec replaced medieval wooden houses with massive stone buildings. Each house on the square features elaborate gables and arcades, designed in a unified style yet with individual architectural details. The facades reflect the transition from Gothic to Renaissance and later to Baroque, giving the ensemble exceptional aesthetic harmony. Particularly noteworthy is the technical achievement of the era in constructing these houses on marshy ground using pile foundations. Due to its uniqueness and excellent state of preservation, the square, along with the adjacent castle, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992. Today, the square is the bustling heart of the town and a magnet for visitors from around the world.
