Svitavy, a historic town in the Pardubice Region, is most famously known as the birthplace of Oskar Schindler, the protector of Jews during WWII, whose story is immortalized in the film 'Schindler's List'. A dedicated museum and exhibition in the Town Museum and Gallery commemorate his life and actions. The town's heart is the elongated Náměstí Míru (Peace Square), which is lined with beautiful Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses featuring welcoming arcades, making it one of the longest of its kind in the country. Historically, Svitavy was a major center for textile production, a heritage that is also explored in the local museum. Other points of interest include the St. Giles' Church and the Ottendorfer House, a former public library and a remarkable example of historicist architecture. The town is surrounded by gentle hills and forests, offering opportunities for cycling and hiking. Svitavy is well-connected by train and road, lying on a major route between Prague and Brno.
