St. Barbara's Cathedral (Czech Republic)

Weather…

St. Barbara's Cathedral in Kutná Hora is a masterpiece of Bohemian Late Gothic architecture and a symbol of the town's former wealth derived from silver mining. Construction began in 1388 at the request of the local burghers, who wanted a grand church to rival St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. Dedicated to St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners, the church features unique medieval frescoes depicting silver mining and coining processes, which are rare for religious buildings. The cathedral is famous for its striking three-peaked tent roof and elaborate flying buttresses designed by renowned architect Benedikt Ried. Due to the decline of the silver mines and various wars, construction was halted multiple times and only fully completed in 1905. Since 1995, the cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, standing as a testament to the town's prestigious historical status.
