Sedlec Ossuary (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Sedlec Ossuary, often called the 'Church of Bones,' is located beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints in a suburb of Kutná Hora. It is one of the most unusual sacred sites in the world, featuring interior decorations made from the bones of over 40,000 people. These macabre artistic arrangements, including a massive chandelier and the Schwarzenberg coat of arms, were fashioned in 1870 by woodcarver František Rint. The bones largely come from victims of 14th-century plagues and 15th-century Hussite Wars. The central chandelier is particularly famous as it contains at least one of every bone in the human body. Far from being intended as scary, the display serves as a 'Memento Mori,' a powerful reminder of the impermanence of human life and the equality of all in death. While in Kutná Hora, visitors should also see the remarkable St. Barbara's Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town's historic center has excellent Czech pubs serving local beers and traditional dishes. Kutná Hora is just a one-hour train or car ride from Prague. The site is open year-round, with the misty autumn days providing an especially evocative atmosphere. Due to its popularity and out of respect for the deceased, interior photography is now prohibited. Visitors are encouraged to explore the ossuary quietly and reflect on its unique historical and spiritual significance.
