Doupov Mountains (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Doupov Mountains (Doupovské hory) are an extinct stratovolcano and one of the largest volcanic mountain ranges in Central Europe. The area is located in the west of the Czech Republic and has been largely inaccessible to the public since 1953 due to its military use as a training area. This decades-long isolation has preserved a unique natural landscape that has been little influenced by humans. The mountains are characterized by a star-shaped network of valleys radiating from the central part. The slopes are covered with species-rich forests, meadows and heathland, which provide a habitat for many rare and endangered animal and plant species, including the black stork and the beaver. Although most of the area is closed, some peripheral areas have been opened up to hikers and cyclists in recent years, offering a glimpse into this wild and untouched landscape.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Accessing this extensive volcanic mountain range is uniquely challenging, as much of it serves as an active military training area. Visitors can typically only explore the outer edges of this wild, uninhabited landscape via limited, officially permitted public trails.
📅
Best season
The warmer months of late spring and summer are generally best for exploring the permitted fringes of this vast, uninhabited area. Access might be further restricted during specific seasons depending entirely on local military training schedules.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is characterized by rugged, rolling volcanic hills covered in wild, overgrown vegetation due to the lack of human habitation. Expect untamed, sometimes poorly marked paths that traverse deeply isolated and naturally reverting terrain.
🎒
What to bring
Robust hiking boots, thick trousers to guard against overgrown thorns, and a reliable GPS device are essential in this wild environment. You must carry all your own food and water, as there are absolutely no facilities in the uninhabited interior.
🅿️
Parking
Finding parking is generally limited to small, informal spots in the few surviving villages scattered along the very edge of the mountain range. Always ensure you are parked legally and not blocking any military or forestry access roads.
⚠️
Safety
It is critically important to strictly observe all warning signs and never enter the restricted military zones under any circumstances. Unexploded ordnance and live training exercises present very real, severe dangers beyond the permitted paths.
⏱️
Time needed
A hike along the accessible borders of this wild volcanic range usually occupies a half-day of intense, remote exploration. Due to strict access limitations, full-day crossings of the interior are generally impossible for regular civilian tourists.
