💡 Tips
- Take the Fichtelberg Cable Car, Germany's oldest aerial tramway, to the summit. To avoid queues, especially on weekends, buy tickets online in advance.
- For a nostalgic journey, take the narrow-gauge Fichtelberg Steam Railway. It gives easy on the eye views of the Ore Mountains. The best photo opportunities are on the right-hand side of the train when travelling towards the Fichtelberg.
- Oberwiesenthal is right on the Czech border. A short walk can take you to the town of Loučná pod Klínovcem, where you can often eat and shop for less.
- Parking in the town centre is often scarce in winter. Use the large designated car parks on the outskirts and the shuttle service to the ski lifts.
- For the best panoramic view, head to the observation tower on top of the Fichtelberg. On a clear day, you can see far into the Bohemian region of Czechia.
🍽 Food
Try these hearty potato pancakes, often served with applesauce. You can find them in most traditional guesthouses in the town centre.
Enjoy venison or wild boar sourced from the local forests. Look for a mountain inn ('Bergbaude') or guesthouse known for its regional specialities.
Warm up with this herbal liqueur, a local specialty. Many restaurants offer it as a digestif after a meal.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Along the main streets, you'll find plenty of shops selling or renting ski and hiking gear, often with expert local advice.
While Seiffen is the main hub, you can also find shops in Oberwiesenthal selling authentic nutcrackers, smoking figures, and Christmas pyramids.
Away from the main ski slopes and cable car station, there are numerous well-marked hiking trails that are cleared even in winter, offering peace and nature.
This quiet valley on the Czech border is a nature reserve and convenient for a peaceful walk along the stream.
The neo-Gothic church in the town centre is a place of tranquility. Check its opening hours for a moment of quiet reflection.
Water temperature…
At 914 meters above sea level, Oberwiesenthal proudly holds the title of the highest city in Germany. Located in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) at the foot of the 1,215-meter Fichtelberg, it is Saxony's premier winter sports destination. The town is home to Germany's oldest cable car (opened in 1924), which transports visitors to the summit year-round. Another major attraction is the Fichtelberg Railway, a historic steam-powered narrow-gauge train that puffs through the scenic forests from Cranzahl up to the town. In winter, the resort features well-groomed slopes, cross-country trails, and a ski jump where Olympic legends like Jens Weißflog trained. During summer, the area transforms into a hiking and mountain biking paradise, featuring a summer toboggan run and a 'Fly-Line' zip-wire forest coaster. The town is deeply rooted in Ore Mountain traditions, especially evident during the Christmas season when traditional candle arches (Schwibbogen) light up every window. The Czech border runs right along the town's edge, allowing for easy trips to the neighboring Czech village of Boží Dar. Travelers typically arrive via Chemnitz and Annaberg-Buchholz, with the steam train from Cranzahl being the most nostalgic option. The best time to visit is during the snowy winter months for skiing or mid-summer for outdoor adventures. Culinary treats include regional potato-based dishes and hearty Ore Mountain cuisine. Oberwiesenthal gives crisp mountain air and a first-rate infrastructure for both professional athletes and vacationing families.
