Adršpach-Teplice Rocks (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, located in Northeastern Bohemia, represent one of the most significant sandstone rock formations in Central Europe. The protected area covers 17.7 square kilometers and consists of two main complexes separated by the seven-kilometer-long Vlčí rokle (Wolf's Gorge). These formations were created over millions of years through the erosion of Cretaceous sandstone, resulting in unique shapes such as the Lovers, the Mayor and Mayoress, and the Sugar Loaf. Historically, the area was largely inaccessible until a major forest fire in 1824 cleared much of the vegetation, allowing for the development of tourism. The river Metuje flows through the site, forming a deep canyon and two waterfalls, the larger of which drops 16 meters. Today, the rocks serve as a crucial nesting site for the peregrine falcon and are a popular destination for rock climbers and nature enthusiasts. The site has been protected as a national nature reserve since 1933, ensuring the preservation of its delicate microclimate and diverse flora, including various rare mosses and ferns.
