Sanctuary of Palaipaphos (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Sanctuary of Palaipaphos, located in the modern village of Kouklia, was one of the most significant religious centers of the ancient world and the principal site for the worship of Aphrodite. The sacred area is home to a history stretching back to the 12th century BC when Mycenaean settlers established the first temple. In antiquity, Palaipaphos (Old Paphos) was the ultimate destination for pilgrims from across the Mediterranean who traveled to pay homage to the goddess of love and beauty. The sanctuary was characterized by an aniconic cult where Aphrodite was worshipped in the form of a black, conical stone (baetylus), which is now displayed in the local museum. The site features remains from various periods, including massive Roman temple structures and the House of Leda with its fine mosaics. Following the rise of Christianity and the closure of pagan temples in the 4th century AD, the site declined in importance. Today, Palaipaphos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and gives a fascinating glimpse into early religious practices and the enduring evolution of the Aphrodite myth in Cyprus.
