Paphos Forest Gorge

The gorges within the Paphos Forest are among the most pristine natural environments in western Cyprus, standing as a testament to the powerful geological forces that shaped the island. Covering approximately 600 square kilometers, the Paphos Forest is defined by deep-cut valleys with steep walls of dark volcanic rock, often flanked by dense pine forests and endemic alders. These gorges serve as vital ecological sanctuaries, providing a habitat for rare species such as the Cyprus Mouflon and various birds of prey. Seasonal streams flow through the canyons, carrying substantial volumes of water during the winter months and acting as the primary agents of erosion for the tough bedrock. Hikers who venture into these remote areas find exceptional silence and a level of biodiversity that is rarely seen in the more developed coastal regions. The flora includes rare orchids and endemic shrubs like the Akamas centaury, which thrives in the rocky crevices. Due to its high ecological significance, the entire area is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network.
