Pafos Forest is one of the ecologically richest areas in Cyprus. The largest forest in Cyprus, covering a significant part of the Troodos range, well-suited for hiking and nature observation. Aleppo pine, cypress, oak and Mediterranean maquis form a dense habitat mosaic that supports many birds, reptiles and mammals while delivering essential water and soil services. Forest roads, walking trails and picnic sites allow respectful access without overloading sensitive zones, and interpretive panels explain geology, flora, fauna and the history of forestry on the island. In summer the canopy acts as natural air-conditioning and a popular family destination, and spring brings a vivid bloom of wildflowers. Fire-prevention works, research stations and conservation rules show how essential mindful management of this fragile Mediterranean ecosystem is for future generations.

Getting there

Access to this vast forest area is mostly via winding mountain roads leading up into the Troodos mountain range. There are numerous designated starting points for hiking trails located along the main traffic routes.

Best season

The forest climate has a welcome, cool escape from the heat of the Cypriot coast, especially in midsummer. In winter, snow can actually fall in the higher elevations of the forest, potentially blocking roads.

Terrain & paths

The terrain is expansive and heavily undulated, featuring a mix of wide logging roads and challenging, narrow mountain paths. The elevation changes require a certain level of fitness for longer hikes.

What to bring

Robust hiking boots with good tread are essential, as are warm layers of clothing since it can quickly get chilly in the mountains. A detailed hiking map and plenty of provisions are highly recommended.

Along the roads through the forest, there are periodically designated picnic areas and small parking pull-outs. For longer hikes, it is well-suited to use the parking lots at the official visitor centers in the mountains.

Due to the vastness of the area, visitors should strictly stay on the marked trails to avoid getting lost in the wilderness. Wildlife should be observed respectfully from a distance and never be fed by humans.
