Lake
Vransko Lake Nature Park encompasses the largest natural lake in Croatia, situated parallel to the Adriatic coast between Zadar and Šibenik. The park covers a total area of approximately 57 square kilometers, with the lake itself spanning about 30 square kilometers. Geologically, it is a karst field filled with water, forming a cryptodepression where the surface remains above sea level while the bottom reaches below it. Designated as a nature park in 1999, the area is an internationally recognized bird sanctuary included in the Ramsar list of wetlands. It serves as a habitat for over 250 bird species, including a significant colony of purple herons. The park also features the Maškovića Han, a 17th-century Ottoman fortress and residence, which represents the westernmost secular Turkish building in Europe.

Getting there
The deeply beautiful nature park featuring the exceptionally large ornithological reserve is highly easily reached via purely asphalted main roads near Biograd na Moru, where absolutely multiple official, fully well-signposted entrances very warmly welcome all nature lovers.
Best season
Above all, the actively blooming spring and highly cool autumn are absolutely outstanding for intensive bird watching, exactly when tens of thousands of migratory birds rest here and the extensive, heavily water-rich wetlands are completely and audibly full of bustling life.
Terrain & paths
A genuinely gigantic network consisting of absolutely flat, totally slip-resistant wooden walkways and broadly wide gravel paths safely leads directly through the wild, marshy ornithological reserve and heavily along the beautiful shore, making it truly good for all ages and families.
What to bring
A highly premium quality pair of binoculars is an absolutely unavoidable, strict must for highly enthusiastic birders here; additionally, deeply comfortable, soft walking shoes, completely strong mosquito repellent in summer, and utterly reliable sun protection are enormously recommended.
Parking
Very ample and, above all, highly generously designed parking spaces are heavily and constantly available for all arriving guests directly at the entirely official information centers and the deeply marked starting points of the great nature trails fully surrounding the gigantic lake.
Safety
To fully and effectively protect the extremely disturbance-sensitive, highly rare birdlife, it is completely imperative to be quiet, to absolutely never leave the safely marked paths, and to consistently and strictly keep any brought dogs tightly on a very short leash near you.
Time needed
Highly fascinated visitors usually spend quite unnoticed between two and four fully rewarding hours here to extensively and completely relaxed stroll along the large wooden walkways, quietly observe extremely rare birds in total peace, and visit the deeply educational center.
