💡 Tips
- Take the ferry from Zadar to Brbinj on Dugi Otok island, then it's a 20-30 minute drive or bus ride.
- The water is extremely shallow and warm, making it excellent for families with small children. You can walk out very far.
- In the summer, a tourist train connects the beach with the nearby village of Božava.
- Parking near the beach is paid during the high season. Arrive early to secure a good spot.
🍽 Food
There are a couple of simple beach bars right on Sakarun offering cold drinks, ice cream, and simple meals like burgers or salads.
For an authentic experience, reserve a 'peka' (a dish of meat or octopus cooked under a bell-like lid covered in embers) at a konoba in the villages of Veli Rat or Božava.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy some regional cheese and local olive oil in the island's larger villages like Sali or Božava.
Find basic souvenirs like postcards or hand-made trinkets in the small shops in the main villages on the island.
Visit the tallest lighthouse in the Adriatic for memorable views and a quieter atmosphere away from the beach crowds.
Take a trip to the southern end of the island. Explore the dramatic cliffs, the 'Mir' salt lake, and the tranquil bays.
Located on the other side of the island, this bay with its sea caves provides a dramatic and secluded landscape, best explored by kayak.
Water temperature…
Sakarun is located in the northwest of Dugi Otok island and spans a width of about 800 meters. Although the beach itself is a mix of fine pebbles and sand, the seabed is entirely covered with white sand, giving the water its characteristic bright turquoise hue. Because the water remains very shallow far from the shore, Sakarun is a well-suited destination for families with small children. The bay is fringed by dark pine forests that provide a sharp contrast to the bright beach and offer natural shade. Despite its popularity, Sakarun has maintained its natural character as there are no large hotels in the immediate vicinity. Two small beach bars cater to guests during the summer. Dugi Otok island is part of the Zadar archipelago and provides further sights, such as the nearby Veli Rat lighthouse. Arrival is typically by ferry or catamaran from Zadar to Brbinj or Božava, followed by a short shuttle bus or tourist train ride to the beach. The best time to visit is from June to mid-September. Those seeking tranquility should visit during the shoulder seasons, as the beach is a popular target for organized boat trips from Zadar in high summer. Staying in the villages of Veli Rat or Božava allows you to enjoy the beach during the quiet morning hours.
