Sveti Lovreč, often called Sveti Lovreč Pazenatički, is a gem in the hinterland of Poreč. The town was built on a hill and in the Middle Ages served as the seat of the Venetian military captain for all of Istria. The impressive city walls, with their towers and gates, are almost completely preserved and enclose the historic core in a striking circular shape. Entering the town through the main gate, you immediately feel transported back in time. The most significant monument is the 11th-century Basilica of St. Martin, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture with three apses and remains of frescoes. In the central square, 'Placa', you can find a stone pillory and the loggia, where important decisions were once made. Every year during Christmas, Sveti Lovreč transforms into a living nativity scene, an event that attracts thousands of visitors. The surroundings of Sveti Lovreč are characterized by red soil ('Crvenica'), convenient for growing olives and grapes. There are numerous wineries and olive oil producers offering tastings. For cyclists, the town is as the historic 'Parenzana' railway trail runs nearby. Sveti Lovreč gives an authentic Istrian atmosphere away from the mass tourism of the coast, although the sea is only a 15-minute drive away.
