Kistanje is located on the Bukovica plateau, not far from the Krka River. The settlement has a turbulent history and is best known today for its proximity to the Krka Monastery, one of the most important spiritual centers of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Croatia. Founded in the 14th century, the monastery is picturesquely situated in a canyon on the riverbank and houses valuable icons and manuscripts. In the immediate vicinity of Kistanje are the remains of Burnum, a Roman military camp with a well-preserved amphitheater. History buffs can visit the foundations of ancient buildings and monumental arches here. The landscape is characterized by barren karst, olive groves, and vineyards, giving the region a rustic charm. For nature lovers, Kistanje provides the great starting point to explore the less crowded parts of Krka National Park. The Manojlovački waterfalls, the highest in the park, are located nearby and offer a spectacular panorama. Local gastronomy is based on simple but hearty dishes such as lamb under the bell (peka) and regional wine.
