Burnum Roman Camp (Croatia)

Weather…

Burnum was a significant Roman military camp and later a municipality located on the right bank of the Krka River, within the modern-day Krka National Park. Established in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Augustus, it served as a permanent base for the Legio XI Claudia and later the Legio IV Flavia Felix. Its strategic position allowed the Romans to control the river crossing and the vital road networks connecting the coastal areas with the Dalmatian hinterland. The site features the only Roman military amphitheater in Croatia, which could accommodate between 6,000 and 10,000 spectators for military drills and entertainment. Another prominent landmark is the set of monumental arches belonging to the Principia, the camp's administrative headquarters, which still stand impressively in the landscape. Extensive archaeological research has yielded a wealth of military equipment, tools, and personal items, now displayed at the Puljane Archaeological Museum. Although it thrived for centuries, Burnum was ultimately destroyed in the 7th century during the migrations of Avars and Slavs. Today, it stands as a major historical site reflecting the scale of Roman military presence in the region.
