Kaštel Gomilica (Croatia)

Weather…

Kaštel Gomilica, also known as Kaštilac, is one of the most visually striking fortifications in the Kaštela Bay, located between Split and Trogir. The fortress was built in the first half of the 16th century, specifically between 1529 and 1533, by Benedictine nuns from Split to protect their estates and the local peasantry from Ottoman raids. Its most distinctive feature is its construction on a small sea rock, connected to the mainland by a narrow stone bridge. The complex includes high defensive walls and a prominent square tower that served as a lookout point against threats from both land and sea. Inside the walls, several families established residences, creating a densely packed residential cluster on the water. In recent years, it gained global fame as a filming location for the city of Braavos in the 'Game of Thrones' television series. Despite this fame, it remains a tranquil and authentic example of Renaissance-era maritime defense architecture.
