Prokurative (Republic Square) (Croatia)

Weather…

Prokurative, officially known as Republic Square, is one of the most magnificent public spaces in Split and a striking example of 19th-century Neo-Classical architecture. The square was developed on the initiative of Mayor Antonio Bajamonti, who aimed to transform Split into a modern European metropolis. Its design was heavily inspired by Venetian architecture, specifically the Procuratie on Saint Mark's Square in Venice, which is reflected in the characteristic red buildings with their elegant arches and arcades. Construction began in 1859 and continued over several decades. Today, the square serves as a stage for numerous cultural events, with the Split Summer Festival and the Split Music Festival being the most prominent. Its location directly by the sea, adjacent to the Riva promenade, makes it a popular gathering spot for both locals and tourists, offering a grand Mediterranean atmosphere.
