Omiš is a fascinating town in the heart of Dalmatia, where the emerald Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea through a deep canyon. Historically known as the seat of the Omiš pirates who dominated the sea in the 12th and 13th centuries, the town preserves a rich medieval heritage. The Mirabella fortress (Peovica) towers directly above the old town, once serving as a lookout, while the higher Starigrad fortress (Fortica) features spectacular panoramic views over the islands of Brač, Hvar, and Šolta. The old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets, small squares, and stone houses. The 17th-century Church of Sveti Mihovil is a central landmark where the famous Klapa festivals take place in summer, traditional Dalmatian a cappella singing listed by UNESCO. Beyond history, Omiš is a hub for active travelers; the Cetina canyon provides opportunities for rafting, canyoning, and ziplining. Omiš beaches are diverse, ranging from the large sandy Velika Plaža in the town center to hidden pebble coves along the riviera. Gastronomically, the region is famous for peka (meat or fish cooked under a bell-shaped lid) and soparnik, a traditional savory chard pie. The town uniquely combines alpine rock landscapes with Mediterranean flair and crystal-clear water, making it one of the most dynamic destinations on the Croatian coast.
