💡 Tips
- Drive the Biokovo road as early in the morning as possible to avoid traffic and the intense midday sun. The road is narrow and challenging.
- Buy your ticket for the nature park online in advance. This secures your entry and avoids queues at the entrance.
- The weather can change quickly in the mountains. Bring layers and a waterproof jacket, even on a sunny day.
- The Skywalk can get very crowded. For a quieter view, stop at one of the smaller, marked viewpoints along the road.
- Bring plenty of water and snacks. There are very limited options to buy anything once you are past the entrance.
🍽 Food
Try this traditional dish of meat or seafood slow-cooked under a bell-like lid covered in embers. Find it in a 'konoba' (tavern) in the villages at the foot of Biokovo.
Enjoy this air-dried ham as a starter, often served with local cheese and olives. Look for restaurants that advertise local produce.
The restaurants along the Makarska Riviera are famous for their fresh, simply grilled fish served with olive oil, garlic, and parsley.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for small roadside stalls selling honey from the region, liqueurs, and bags of aromatic herbs like lavender or rosemary.
The region is known for its olive oil. Buy from local producers directly or in the markets in towns like Makarska for an authentic product.
Located at the foot of the mountain, this garden is a peaceful spot dedicated to preserving the native flora. Convenient for a quiet walk.
Escape the crowds by exploring one of the many marked hiking trails that lead away from the main road area. Always check the difficulty and length in advance.
Instead of parking at the Skywalk, drive a little further and find a quieter pull-off to enjoy the impressive coastal views in peace.
Water temperature…
The Biokovo mountain range is Croatia's second-highest massif, rising sharply from the Adriatic coast. This protected Nature Park is a karst wonderland, featuring sinkholes, deep caves, and unique flora adapted to harsh winds. Its most famous modern attraction is the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass walkway protruding over a 1228-meter abyss at Ravna Vlaška. The highest point, Sveti Jure, stands at 1762 meters and is accessible via a narrow, winding 23-kilometer mountain road, the highest paved road in the country. From the top, visitors can see the entire Dalmatian archipelago and, on exceptionally clear days, the peaks of Italy's Apennines. The area is well-suited for experienced hikers, botanists, and nature lovers seeking refuge from the summer heat of the Makarska Riviera below.
