Bast is a gem of the Makarska Riviera that is not located by the sea, but high up on the slopes of the Biokovo Mountains. While tourists crowd the beaches of Baška Voda, Bast has an oasis of calm and a spectacular panoramic view over the Adriatic and the islands of Brač and Hvar. The village is characterized by centuries-old stone houses, narrow alleys, and an atmosphere reminiscent of times gone by. The residents of Bast traditionally lived from agriculture, viticulture, and harvesting medicinal herbs on Biokovo. Today, the village is a popular starting point for hikers wishing to climb the Sveti Ilija peak or other parts of the Biokovo Nature Park. Near the village are several drinking water springs that were once vital and now refresh hikers. The Church of St. Roch and the neo-Gothic Church of St. Mary are cultural landmarks in the village. Culinary-wise, Bast is known for its excellent konobas offering traditional dishes like peka or air-dried ham. Despite its proximity to the coast, Bast has preserved its authentic character as new construction projects are strictly regulated. It is the excellent place for guests who spend the day at the beach but want to enjoy the evening in the cool mountain air and absolute silence.
