Church of St. Blaise (Croatia)

Weather…

The Church of St. Blaise (Crkva sv. Vlaha) is one of Dubrovnik's most exquisite Baroque landmarks, dedicated to the city's patron saint. The present church was completed in 1715 on the foundations of a 14th-century Romanesque church that was severely damaged by the 1667 earthquake and later destroyed by fire. Designed by the Venetian architect Marino Gropelli, the building follows the model of the San Maurizio church in Venice. Its ornate facade features a statue of St. Blaise holding a model of the city, providing a rare glimpse of Dubrovnik's pre-earthquake layout. Inside, the main altar houses a 15th-century silver-gilt statue of the saint, which famously survived the fire that leveled the previous structure. The church is centrally located at the end of the Stradun, opposite the Sponza Palace. Every February 3rd, it becomes the heart of the Feast of St. Blaise, a celebration inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The interior is characterized by grand marble altars and a dome that floods the space with natural light, emphasizing its spiritual and civic importance.
