Biokovo Nature Park (Croatia)

Weather…

Biokovo Nature Park stretches along the Dalmatian coast above the Makarska Riviera and is renowned for its dramatic vertical relief. The mountain range rises steeply from the sea, reaching an elevation of 1,762 meters at its highest point, Sveti Jure, making it the second-highest peak in Croatia. The karst landscape is characterized by numerous sinkholes, pits, and over 400 caves, some of which contain ice throughout the year. A major modern attraction is the Skywalk Biokovo, a glass-bottomed viewing platform at 1,228 meters that provides dramatic views of the Adriatic Sea. The park's flora comprises over 1,500 plant species, including the endemic Biokovo bellflower. Despite its rugged appearance, the mountain supports diverse wildlife, such as chamois and mouflons, which thrive on the steep rocky slopes. Historically, the mountain is dotted with ancient shepherd's paths and stone houses that testify to former alpine pastoral life.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The nature park is primarily accessed via a very steep, winding panoramic road that starts near the Makarska Riviera coastline. The entrance gate strictly manages traffic flow, as the narrow mountain road can quickly become quite congested.
📅
Best season
Late spring and early autumn are truly handy for visiting, consistently providing clear views and much more manageable temperatures. Summer is very popular but can be intensely hot, with extremely limited shade available on the rocky slopes.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The massive landscape is intensely characterized by severe, rocky karst terrain, deep sinkholes, and steep mountain slopes. While the main attractions have highly secure walkways, hiking trails require navigating very uneven, rugged rocks.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, thick-soled hiking footwear is essential, as the famously sharp karst rocks can easily destroy light sneakers. Due to the total lack of natural water sources and intense sun, carrying an abundant supply of water is absolutely critical.
🅿️
Parking
There are small designated parking areas at key viewpoints, including the famous Skywalk. Space is extremely limited up high, which is exactly why the park administration often strictly regulates the overall number of vehicles entering.
⚠️
Safety
Never underestimate the mountain's harsh conditions; temperatures can unexpectedly drop, and dense fog can roll in very suddenly. Stay far away from the dangerous edges of the deep karst pits and strictly stick to the officially marked trails.
⏱️
Time needed
Driving the complete panoramic road and slowly stopping at the viewpoints usually takes at least three to four hours. If you plan to heavily undertake any serious hiking in the karst, you should absolutely allocate an entire, long day.
