The coastal formations at Itsamia on Mohéli island are accessible via the local coastal road, which is typically traveled from the capital Fomboni by taxi or a rented vehicle.

A visit is possible year-round, but for observing sea turtles, the period between April and October is especially recommended, as weather conditions are generally more stable then.

The terrain consists of striking lava formations, natural bays, and sandy beaches; the basaltic rocks can be sharp-edged and very slippery when wet near the water's edge.
