Getting there
Access to the crater lake involves travelling to the southern tip of the island via basic coastal roads. From the drop-off point, a moderate uphill walk is required to reach the crater rim observation area.
Best season
The drier months, from May to October, are definitely preferable for clear views of the animated green water. The rainy season often brings low-hanging clouds that completely obscure the crater basin.
Terrain & paths
The path ascending the dormant volcano is quite steep and heavily compacted with reddish dirt and loose volcanic gravel. The immediate rim edge is largely exposed and drops away dramatically.
What to bring
Good walking shoes that can handle loose gravel without slipping are highly important for the climb. Bringing a camera with a polarizing filter helps capture the intense color contrast of the lake.
Parking
There is usually a rudimentary clearing near the start of the trail where vehicles can be temporarily parked. It is wise not to leave any valuables visible inside unattended cars in this remote spot.
Safety
The scent of sulfur can be quite strong depending on wind direction; those with respiratory issues should proceed cautiously. The steep edges around the crater lack any formal safety barriers.
Time needed
