Ouallah is a significant community in the southwest of Mohéli Island, primarily consisting of the settlements Ouallah I and Ouallah II. The region is internationally known for its efforts to protect Livingstone's fruit bats, one of the rarest bat species in the world, which live in the forested highlands above the village. Geographically, Ouallah is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest and rugged volcanic mountains, which complicates access in some parts but guarantees exceptional natural preservation. The local economy is based on the cultivation of export goods such as vanilla and cloves, as well as artisanal coastal fishing. Historically, Ouallah was the site of important community development projects that linked environmental protection with improving the population's living conditions. The village serves as a starting point for hikes to spectacular waterfalls and viewpoints over the Indian Ocean. Social order is maintained by traditional village elders and religious leaders, who play a major role in managing natural resources.
