Bird Paradise of Chissioua Mchaco

The Bird Paradise of Chissioua Mchaco is an uninhabited rocky islet south of Mohéli, regarded as one of the most significant nesting sites for seabirds in the western Indian Ocean. This rugged yet ecologically precious island is part of the Mohéli Marine Park and provides sanctuary for thousands of birds, including Masked Boobies, Frigatebirds, and Sooty Terns. Since the island is free of natural predators like rats or cats, the birds can nest undisturbed on the ground or in low-lying shrubs. The surrounding turquoise waters are exceptionally rich in fish, ensuring a steady food supply for the breeding colonies. The white guano deposits on the dark volcanic rocks are visible from afar, bearing witness to centuries of occupation by bird populations. Access to the island is strictly regulated to avoid disturbing the sensitive nesting grounds, making Chissioua Mchaco a true refuge of untouched nature. Historically used by local fishers as a navigational landmark, it is now a symbol of international conservation efforts. Watching the massive swarms of birds at sunset is a spectacular natural phenomenon.
