The clove groves of Mohéli are a fundamental part of the agricultural identity of the smallest main island in the Comoros. The clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum) thrives particularly well on the slopes of Mohéli's volcanic mountain range, where the humid microclimate provides optimal growing conditions. The harvesting of the unopened flower buds is performed manually, often requiring pickers to climb into the upper canopies of trees that can reach heights of 12 meters. Once harvested, the cloves are spread out on large mats to dry in the tropical sun, a process that develops their characteristic reddish-brown color and intense pungency. During the harvest season at the end of the year, the scent of cloves permeates almost every village on the island. Clove production is a vital source of income for Mohélians and contributes significantly to economic stability, as the Comoros is internationally esteemed for its high-quality spice exports. These groves are mostly managed by small family farms that have passed down the expertise of tree maintenance through generations.
