Museum of Independence - Casa del Florero (Colombia)

Weather…

The Museum of Independence, known as Casa del Florero, is located at the northeastern corner of Bolívar Square in Bogotá. This 16th-century building is the site where, on July 20, 1810, the uprising against Spanish rule began. The trigger was a dispute over the loan of a flower vase (florero) belonging to Spanish merchant José González Llorente for a banquet in honor of Creole Antonio Villavicencio. This incident led to the signing of Colombia's Declaration of Independence. The house's architecture is a classic example of the colonial style with white walls, wooden balconies, and a central courtyard. Today, the museum houses documents, personal belongings of the independence heroes, and, of course, the fragments of the famous vase. It is a central site for Colombia's national memory and identity.
