Primary Cathedral of Colombia (Colombia)

Weather…

The Primary Cathedral of Colombia, officially the Metropolitan Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, stands proudly on the eastern side of Bolívar Square in the heart of Bogotá. The current building is the fourth church erected on this site, with the foundation stone laid in 1807 and its consecration celebrated in 1823. Designed by the Capuchin friar Domingo de Petrés, the cathedral is a masterpiece of Neoclassicism, housing valuable religious artworks and the remains of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, the city's founder. The facade is structured by Corinthian and Ionic columns, while the interior is divided into three naves. As the seat of the Archbishop of Bogotá, it plays a central role in Colombia's religious and political life. Due to its historical and cultural significance, it was declared a National Monument in 1975.
