Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Colombia)

Weather…

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is a monumental underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine in Colombia. Located approximately 180 meters below the earth's surface, it is considered one of the most significant architectural and religious structures in the country. The current cathedral was inaugurated in 1995 after the original church had to be closed due to structural safety concerns. The layout is divided into three sections representing the birth, life, and death of Jesus Christ, featuring a Way of the Cross with 14 stations carved directly into the halite rock. A major highlight is the massive 16-meter-high cross situated behind the main altar, which, coupled with dramatic lighting, creates a deeply spiritual atmosphere. The site serves not only as a place of worship but also as a museum detailing the history of salt mining in the region. The Salt Cathedral was voted as one of the seven wonders of Colombia by the public.
