The Christopher Columbus Theater, widely known as the Teatro Colón, is Colombia's national opera house, located in the historic La Candelaria district of Bogotá. Designed by Italian architect Pietro Cantini in the neoclassical style, it was inaugurated on October 12, 1892, to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas. The theater is celebrated for its classic horseshoe-shaped auditorium, modeled after the great European opera houses of the 19th century, with a seating capacity of approximately 900. The interior features exquisite craftsmanship, including ceiling frescoes by Italian artist Annibale Gatti depicting the Greek muses and a magnificent stage curtain crafted in Florence. Beyond hosting opera and ballet, the theater serves as a vital hub for Colombian performing arts and is the primary stage for major national symphonic and choral groups. It was designated a National Monument in 1975 and voted one of the Seven Wonders of Colombia in a 2007 national architectural poll.
