Serranía de San Lucas (Colombia)

Weather…

The Serranía de San Lucas is an isolated mountain range in northern Colombia, spanning the departments of Bolívar and Antioquia. Geologically, it forms the northern end of the Central Cordillera and reaches altitudes of up to 2,700 meters above sea level. The region is of strategic ecological importance as it acts as a biological corridor between the Andes and the tropical lowlands. It hosts an exceptional diversity of animal and plant species, including many endemic birds and mammals such as the jaguar. Despite its ecological value, the range is severely threatened by illegal gold mining and deforestation, leading to significant environmental stress. Historically, due to its ruggedness, the region was long a sanctuary and a theater for armed conflicts. Current efforts are focused on protecting parts of the mountains as a national park to preserve the remaining primary forests and the vital watersheds for the Magdalena and Cauca rivers.
