Castillo San Felipe de Barajas (Colombia)

Weather…

Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is an imposing fortress in Cartagena, Colombia, constructed during the Spanish colonial era to defend the city. Construction began in 1536 and the structure underwent numerous expansions and reinforcements over the next 150 years. Located on San Lázaro Hill, the fortress strategically commands the approaches to the city from both land and sea. It is regarded as the most outstanding example of Spanish military engineering in the New World. The complex gained particular fame for successfully repelling the massive British invasion led by Admiral Edward Vernon in 1741, during which a vastly superior naval force was defeated. A sophisticated system of tunnels allowed for rapid troop movement and secure underground communication. Since 1984, the fortress has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Port, Fortresses and Group of Monuments of Cartagena, and remains one of Colombia's most visited historical landmarks.
