San Pedro Claver Church (Colombia)

Weather…

The San Pedro Claver Church in Cartagena de Indias is an outstanding example of Jesuit architecture and a site of immense historical significance. Built between 1580 and 1654, it was originally known as San Ignacio de Loyola. It was later renamed after Saint Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest who dedicated his life to protecting and providing spiritual care for the slaves brought to the colony. The church is situated in the heart of the walled old city and is distinguished by its imposing stone facade and the characteristic dome, which was added in the 20th century. The adjacent convent houses a museum and the room where the saint lived and died. Inside the church, directly beneath the main altar, the mortal remains of San Pedro Claver are preserved in a glass shrine.
