Historic Centre of Santa Cruz de Mompox (Colombia)

Weather…

The Historic Centre of Santa Cruz de Mompox is located on an island in the Magdalena River and stands as a jewel of Colombian colonial architecture. Founded in 1537, Mompox played a critical role in the Spanish conquest and inland trade, serving as a vital river port between Cartagena and the interior highlands. The town is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved streets, churches, and houses featuring intricate wrought-iron grills and expansive courtyards. In 1810, Mompox became the first town in Colombia to declare absolute independence from Spain. Due to a shift in the course of the Magdalena River, the town lost its economic prominence in the late 19th century, which paradoxically helped preserve its historical urban landscape. Since 1995, it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mompox is also famous for its traditional gold filigree jewelry and its solemn Holy Week processions.
