Palace of the Inquisition (Colombia)

Weather…

The Palace of the Inquisition in Cartagena de Indias is one of the most magnificent structures from Colombia's colonial era. Completed in 1770, the building was the seat of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, established in 1610 to combat heresy and witchcraft in the New World. Architecturally, the palace is a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque, recognizable by its monumental stone portal, finely crafted wooden balconies, and typical window grilles. Inside, a cool cloister surrounds a central garden. The rooms once housed courtrooms, prisons, and torture chambers. Today, the palace serves as the Historical Museum of Cartagena, showcasing exhibitions on the history of the Inquisition and the city's cultural development. Located by Bolívar Park, it stands as a memorial to a dark chapter of religious history.
