The Fort of San Fernando de Bocachica is a formidable colonial military structure located on Tierrabomba Island, guarding the main entrance to the bay of Cartagena de Indias. Completed in the 18th century to replace earlier defenses, the fort was specifically designed to protect the Bocachica channel, the only deep-water passage for ships entering the city’s harbor. Its most striking feature is its horseshoe or semicircular shape, an advanced design of the period that allowed for concentrated cannon fire against invading naval forces. The fort played a pivotal role in legendary battles, most notably the 1741 siege by Admiral Edward Vernon’s British fleet. Built primarily from local coral stone, the fortress includes vaulted chambers, military quarters, and a small chapel, all remarkably preserved. Visitors can reach the site via a boat ride from Cartagena, where they can walk the battlements and explore the dry moat surrounding the walls. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Cartagena, the fort stands as a silent sentinel of Spain's strategic military dominance in the Caribbean.
