Isla Barú
Barú is a highly sought-after destination for those looking to experience the quintessential Caribbean beach life. While technically a peninsula separated from the mainland by the Canal del Dique, it feels like an exclusive island retreat. It is globally recognized for Playa Blanca, a memorable stretch of powdery white sand meeting intensely turquoise waters, making it for beach lovers and sun-seekers. Beyond just lounging on the sand and swimming in the warm sea, visitors can engage in snorkeling to explore the nearby coral reefs or rent jet skis for an adrenaline rush. The National Aviary of Colombia (Aviario Nacional) is also located on Barú, offering a fantastic opportunity to see diverse bird species in beautifully recreated natural habitats. Boat tours to the neighboring Rosario Islands often depart from here as well. Fresh seafood, especially fried mojarra fish served with coconut rice, dominates the beachfront menus. You can reach Barú by boat from Cartagena in about 45 minutes, or by land via a bridge in about an hour. Visiting during the week or in the low seasons is highly recommended to escape the heavy crowds.
