Malambo is a historically significant city in the Atlántico Department and part of the Barranquilla metropolitan area. Its origins stretch back to pre-Columbian times when the area was inhabited by the Mocaná people, whose complex social structures and ceramics are well-documented by archaeologists. The official Spanish founding by Pedro de Heredia in 1533 makes Malambo one of the oldest settlements in Colombia's Caribbean region. During the colonial era, it served as a strategic outpost on the banks of the Magdalena River. Throughout the 20th century, Malambo transitioned from an agricultural community into a major industrial hub. Today, the city hosts numerous factories and logistics firms, benefiting from its proximity to the Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport and the seaport of Barranquilla. Despite rapid industrialization, Malambo preserves its cultural heritage through local festivals that celebrate its indigenous roots and colonial history, maintaining a unique identity within the urban sprawl.
