Rock of Guatapé (Colombia)

Weather…

The Rock of Guatapé, also known as La Piedra del Peñol, is a massive granite inselberg located in the department of Antioquia. The monolith rises approximately 200 meters above the surrounding landscape and is composed primarily of quartz, feldspar, and mica. Its most distinctive feature is the Z-shaped staircase built into a natural crack in the rock, totaling 740 steps to reach the summit. From the observation tower at the top, visitors enjoy a wide-open 360-degree view of the Guatapé reservoir, a vast labyrinth of green islands and blue water. The rock was first officially climbed in 1954, and today it is one of the most visited tourist destinations near Medellín. Geologically, the Peñón is part of the Antioquia Batholith and was formed millions of years ago through tectonic uplift. The nearby towns of Guatapé and El Peñol both claim ownership of the rock, leading to a friendly rivalry and the large, unfinished "GI" painted on the north face.
