Formally founded in 1541, it played a pivotal role in the nation's independence; in 1863, it was the site where one of Colombia's most influential constitutions was signed. Often called the 'Cradle of Democracy,' the city preserves numerous colonial buildings within its historic center. Today, Rionegro serves as the primary urban hub of the San Nicolás Valley and is home to the José María Córdova International Airport, the second busiest in the country. The region has evolved into a major center for industry, commerce, and floriculture, with flower exports reaching markets worldwide. Thanks to its pleasant cool climate and scenic surroundings, Rionegro has also become a favored residential and tourist destination. The city successfully balances its rich historical legacy with modern infrastructure and dynamic economic growth.
