Wanning on Hainan's east coast is the relaxed alternative to bustling Sanya. Shimei Bay is considered one of the island's most beautiful bays, fringed by a dense forest of centuries-old Vatica trees and a kilometers-long, silver-white sand beach. Here, travelers find peace and exclusivity in luxury resorts that blend harmoniously into the tropical landscape. For active travelers, nearby Riyue Bay (Sun and Moon Bay) is the highlight, as it is known as China's surfing mecca. International competitions are held here regularly, and the laid-back surfer community gives the area a special charm. Divers and snorkelers will also enjoy the waters, especially around the offshore Jiajing Island, famous for its clear visibility and coral reefs. Culinary-wise, Wanning gives specialties like 'Dongshan Goat' or 'Hele Crab,' two of Hainan's four most famous dishes. The region is also known for its coffee and cocoa plantations in Xinglong, where you can experience the local coffee culture during a tasting. The mix of sea breeze and the scent of roasted coffee defines the allure of this area. The journey is easy via high-speed train from Haikou or Sanya to Wanning station. The best time to visit is from November to April, when the climate is pleasantly warm and not too humid. A rental car or a private driver is recommended to flexibly explore the scenic coastal road and hidden bays.
