Puerto Williams is the southernmost city in the world, located on the northern coast of Navarino Island in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, along the Beagle Channel. The settlement was originally established as a naval base but is today a major starting point for extreme trekkers and Antarctic expeditions. The rugged, windswept landscape radiates a truly distinct atmosphere. The main attraction of the area is its untouched nature and active tourism. This is the starting point for the famous Dientes de Navarino, a multi-day, extremely challenging high-altitude trek that leads under sharp rock spires, through peat bogs, and across snowfields. The town is home to the Martin Gusinde Anthropological Museum, which details the culture of the extinct Yaghan indigenous people and the history of regional exploration. Reaching Puerto Williams is only possible by a small plane from Punta Arenas or via a 30-plus-hour ferry ride navigating the Patagonian fjords. The pride of the local kitchen is the centolla (Patagonian king crab), caught fresh from the freezing waters of the Beagle Channel. Due to the extreme weather conditions, the tourist season is strictly limited to the short summer months from December to March.
