Milodon Cave (Chile)

Weather…

The Milodon Cave Natural Monument is located near Puerto Natales in Chilean Patagonia and comprises several caves of great paleontological significance. The site gained fame following the 1895 discovery of remains of the giant ground sloth (Mylodon darwini) by German explorer Hermann Eberhard. In the main cave, which is about 200 meters deep and 30 meters high, well-preserved skin and bone fragments of this extinct animal, which lived here over 10,000 years ago, were found. Besides the Milodon, the cave provided evidence of early human settlement in the region and other Ice Age animals such as the saber-toothed tiger. The impressive geological formation was created by water erosion following the retreat of glaciers. Today, the area is a protected site where visitors can admire a life-sized replica of the giant sloth and the imposing cave structures. It is a key location for understanding the Ice Age fauna of South America.
