Alberto de Agostini National Park (Chile)

Weather…

Alberto de Agostini National Park is situated in the far south of Chile, within the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region, spanning 1,460,000 hectares. Established in 1965, the park is named after the Italian missionary and explorer Alberto Maria De Agostini, who spent decades mapping this rugged territory. It encompasses the Darwin Mountain Range, the final dramatic extension of the Andes before they submerge into the southern ocean. The park is characterized by deep fjords, intricate channels, and massive glaciers that calve directly into the sea, such as the impressive Marinelli Glacier. As part of the Cabo de Hornos Biosphere Reserve, it protects vast subantarctic forests and critical marine habitats. Wildlife in the region includes southern elephant seals, leopard seals, and various whale species that thrive in the nutrient-rich cold waters. The vegetation consists primarily of hardy Magellanic species and extensive peat bogs. Due to its extreme subpolar climate and remote location, the park remains one of the most untouched wilderness areas on the planet.
