Lom Pangar Dam (Cameroon)

Weather…

The Lom Pangar Dam is a strategically crucial water management project in the East Region of Cameroon, located at the confluence of the Lom and Pangar Rivers. Unlike purely hydroelectric dams, its primary purpose is to regulate the flow of the Sanaga River to increase the efficiency of the downstream Song Loulou and Edéa power plants during the dry season. With a vast reservoir capacity of six billion cubic meters, it balances seasonal fluctuations and enables an additional power generation of approximately 120 megawatts at the existing sites. Additionally, the dam has its own small 30-megawatt power plant for local supply. The project was completed in 2016 and has noticeably mitigated energy crises during dry months. Ecologically, however, the dam is controversial as it flooded large forest areas, requiring extensive environmental protection measures and relocations.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
The Lom Pangar Dam is a key regulating and storage facility on the Lom River, crucial for managing water flow in the Sanaga river system. It supplies hydroelectric power and supports irrigation, playing a vital role in Cameroon's energy and agriculture sectors.
🚪
Visiting
Access to the dam itself is usually restricted for safety reasons, but the impressive exterior and spillway can be observed from public roads near the site. It is advisable to inquire about viewing opportunities at the local information office.
👀
Where to view it

The area around the dam does not have specific local products directly related to the dam itself. However, regional markets may sell agricultural goods like plantains and cassava that benefit from the irrigation provided by the dam.
📆
Active season
The dam operates year-round, regulating water flows continuously. Its role is especially vital during the rainy season from June to October to prevent flooding downstream.
Nearby
Combine a visit with the nearby town of Bélabo, which serves as a gateway to the eastern region. The Lom River provides opportunities for fishing and boat trips, and the surrounding forest is good for birdwatching.
