Bétaré-Oya Gold Mines (Cameroon)

Weather…

The gold mines of Bétaré-Oya are located in the Lom-et-Djérem department of Cameroon's East Region and represent a major center for the country's gold production. Extraction has taken place here for decades through both artisanal small-scale miners and semi-mechanized companies, with gold primarily recovered from alluvial deposits along riverbeds. Geologically, the area is situated within the Neoproterozoic Sanaga belt, known for its mineral-rich quartz veins. The economic significance for the region is immense, as thousands of people depend directly or indirectly on mining, though the mines often face criticism for lacking environmental standards and destroying agricultural land. In recent years, the government has attempted to formalize the sector through stricter licensing and monitoring of production volumes. Despite these challenges, Bétaré-Oya remains a key factor in Cameroon's goal to significantly increase the mining sector's contribution to the gross domestic product.

🏭
What is this place?
The Bétaré-Oya gold mining area in eastern Cameroon is a major source of precious metal, worked by both small-scale panners and industrial operations. Visitors can witness the hard labour of gold prospecting and the economic engine it provides for the region.
🚪
Visiting
Most mines are active extraction sites not open to the public, but the digging and panning can be observed from public paths. Informal gold-washing spots in the vicinity are also visible from outside without disturbing the work.
👀
Where to view it
A suitable viewpoint is the bridge over the Bétaré River, from where workers can be seen panning for gold along the banks. Higher ground along the access road also provides an overview of the terraced open-pit mining sites.
🧺
Local products
The main product is, of course, gold, sold in small quantities to local traders. The surrounding villages also offer simple tools for gold prospecting and handmade jewellery crafted from the mined gold.
📆
Active season
Gold prospecting occurs year-round, but it intensifies during the dry season from November to March when rivers have less water and panning is more productive. At this time most panners are present and activity is at its peak.
Nearby
A visit to the mines can be combined with a hike in the nearby Bétaré-Oya forest reserve, which gives rich flora and fauna. The town of Bertoua, about 100 kilometres west, is also worth a detour for local markets and culture.
