💡 Tips

  • Batouri is surrounded by dense forests and is a hub for gold mining; ask locals about the history of mining in the area.
  • Motorbike taxis are the quickest way to navigate the unpaved local roads, but always hold on tight.
  • The rainy season turns many roads to mud; if you travel here between April and October, sturdy waterproof boots are essential.
  • French is widely spoken, but learning a few words of the local Kako language will endear you to the residents.
  • Respect the natural surroundings; avoid buying items made from protected forest species.

Batouri is the capital of Kadey Department in the East Region and lies about 100 kilometres east of Bertoua near the border with the Central African Republic. Its roughly 70 000 inhabitants are mostly Kako, Gbaya and Kaka, joined by many refugees from the neighbouring country. The economy rests on cocoa, timber, diamond and gold mining in the Kadey valley, the area is one of Cameroon's most important precious-stone districts. The town has a lively market, several sawmills and a growing hospital. Highlights include the nearby Mobilong diamond mines, the Saint-Pierre Catholic cathedral, the Kadey river valley and the Tikondi waterfalls. The population preserves a rich musical tradition based on likembe and wooden drums. The humid equatorial climate with two rainy seasons supports year-round forestry and plantation farming and secures water supply for mining operations.
